At certain moments in life—professionally, within family, or in social roles—we may be asked to carry responsibilities that pull us away from who we truly are.
When duties conflict with our values or our sense of integrity, emotional pain often follows.
We feel overwhelmed, burdened, conflicted—and the heart grows heavy.
What do we do when we find ourselves in such a moment?
My student, Kathleen, encountered this kind of inner conflict when she was asked to take on an emotionally challenging responsibility at work that did not align with her kind and caring nature.
Overwhelmed by sadness, inner tension, and a profound heaviness in her heart, she chose to meet the unease by seeking support, rather than shutting down or pushing her feelings aside.
What seemed at first to be a difficult professional situation became an unexpected turning point—quietly opening her heart and giving rise to a new sense of lightness, freedom, and direction.
She shares her story below.
Following the Heart with Curiosity: Kathleen’s Spiritual Journey
The Unplanned Beginning
Spiritual journeys rarely announce themselves in advance.
They are rarely planned or prepared.
More often, they arrive sideways — through stress, transition, a quiet nudge, or a recommendation that doesn’t make sense until later.
For Kathleen, the beginning came during a period of intense professional pressure, when the outer structures of her life were demanding more than she could sustainably hold.
Kathleen is a kind and compassionate person.
In 2008, she was working at a startup in a leadership role, facing the emotional weight of impending layoffs.
She had helped build a team she deeply cared about, and the responsibility of dismantling it felt unbearable.
She was tormented and struggled to carry the gravity of that responsibility.
A doctor she worked with — someone who practiced from an integrated Eastern-Western perspective — suggested she see Mika for Reiki.
Kathleen had never experienced Reiki, didn’t know what to expect, and had no particular spiritual agenda.
What she did have was curiosity without judgment, and enough openness to follow it.
A First Experience That Changed Everything
That first Reiki session became a turning point.
Kathleen describes it as profoundly physical and visual — as if garbage was being removed from her body, shapes and forms clearing, old weight being released.
It wasn’t subtle, and it wasn’t theoretical.
It was embodied, immediate, and unmistakably transformative.
Something shifted.
She left the session knowing she had stepped into a different way of relating to herself and her inner world.
The work did not remove her from her responsibilities; instead, it gave her the inner strength and clarity to fulfill them.
In the days that followed, Kathleen was able to carry out the painful task of letting staff go with compassion, presence, and integrity — meeting reality as it was, rather than collapsing under its weight.
At the time, Mika was practicing out of her 21st Street office in Flatiron in New York City.
On her desk sat a small sign advertising a Beginner’s Meditation class.
Kathleen remembers feeling an intuitive pull — not a decision so much as a quiet instruction: this is your next step.
She listened to her inner voice and signed up.
Entering the Practice: Curious and Steady
That class became the doorway.
What followed wasn’t a straight line or a single modality, but an unfolding.
Kathleen moved from Beginner’s Meditation into Healing Meditation, and then into other offerings as they resonated.
Rather than seeking a defined spiritual identity, she allowed curiosity and lived experience to guide her.
She began attending regularly, forming a small circle of fellow students who met consistently and organically became a kind of spiritual community.
She even brought in one of her team members from work, intuitively sensing that the space Mika held could support others navigating stress and transition.
Exploring the Full Spectrum of Healing
Over time, Kathleen explored nearly the full spectrum of Mika’s offerings:
Reiki Level I and II, ongoing Reiki sessions, group and individual meditation classes, past life regression, acupuncture, herbal and holistic wellness guidance, healing nutrition classes, online workshops, spiritual journey classes, and group online meditations during COVID focused on global healing.
She also deepened her practice through the Hawaiian healing tradition of Ho‘oponopono and mantra chanting, including the Moola Mantra.
Rather than feeling scattered, these experiences formed a coherent whole.
Kathleen, who has long been deeply interested in nutrition, health, and wellness, found that Mika’s work aligned naturally with her values, not separating spirituality from the body or from daily life.
Instead, it integrated Eastern medicine, energetic practices, and grounded wisdom into something practical, embodied, and lived.
When Qabalah Revealed Itself
Eventually, the next natural step revealed itself: Qabalah.
For Kathleen, Qabalah was not a departure from what she had already been studying — it was a deepening.
The Tree of Life became not just an abstract map, but an experiential framework for understanding herself.
Over the past five to six years, she has traveled the Sephiroth multiple times in sequence, discovering that growth is cyclical rather than linear.
One Sephirah in particular resonated deeply: Tiphareth, the heart center, the center of the Tree.
The Heart Finds Form in the World
Kathleen’s deep connection to the heart, to beauty, and to creativity eventually inspired the name of her LLC, Tiphareth Heart LLC, through which she is now developing a jewelry line.
What began as inner imagery during meditation found its true expression in the outer world — a living example of how inner work naturally seeks form and function.
Applying the Work in Times of Upheaval
Qabalah also proved its value during real-life upheaval.
Through job loss, mergers, and professional uncertainty, Kathleen found that her studies helped her remain grounded and reflective.
Rather than being reactive, taking things personally, or overwhelmed by emotion, she learned to see challenge as part of a larger rhythm — each ending carrying the seed of something new.
Self-Knowledge, Not Perfection
Just as importantly, the work increased Kathleen’s self-awareness.
She became clearer about her strengths, her blind spots, and the areas where she continues to be invited to grow.
This kind of clarity is not easy; most people instinctively avoid seeing themselves honestly, especially when it means facing weakness, limitation, or unconscious patterns.
The work asked Kathleen not to judge or fix herself, but to see herself — a rare and courageous act that became a foundation for real change rather than spiritual bypassing.
This ongoing inquiry — the search for inner truth and purpose — is what continues to drive her forward.
Finding Spiritual Community
Community has been another essential gift of Mika’s work.
Through long-term study and shared practice, Kathleen found like-minded people who value depth, reflection, and spiritual integrity.
For someone who lived alone and worked remotely in the past, this sense of spiritual tribe has been deeply nourishing.
Continuing the Journey
Today, Kathleen continues her practices while preparing for what comes next: a return to advanced Qabalah study (Level 5) and the pursuit of Reiki Master training.
As part of her routine, she meditates, explores inner-child work, and studies nutrition and longevity — weaving spiritual insight into everyday life.
An Invitation to Begin with Humility
If you are curious, there are multiple entry points. A Beginner’s Meditation, a Reiki session, a workshop, or a seminar can all serve as doorways.
What matters most is innocent curiosity — an open heart and a willingness to trust your intuition without needing to see the entire path.
Kathleen is deeply committed to continuing this process of discovery.
Despite years of study and practice, she often says she feels she barely knows anything yet — that her understanding is still forming, and that her real work has only just begun.
Rather than discouraging her, this awareness fuels her humility, her dedication, and her willingness to keep learning her inner truth.
She is not seeking an endpoint or a sense of arrival.
She is choosing to remain a student — attentive, receptive, and open to what continues to unfold.
At the center of this commitment is the heart.
Kathleen is consciously building her life by listening to that inner voice, allowing Tiphareth — the heart center of the Tree of Life — to serve as her guide and the organizing principle of her creation.
From that center, her work, her choices, and her future continue to take shape.
Kathleen’s journey shows that spiritual growth doesn’t happen all at once.
It unfolds gradually, through practice, community, and lived experience.
If you feel that quiet nudge — the sense that there is more to explore and remember — this may be your invitation to begin.
